Flying from Le Culot to target airfield at Kelz Y-54 on combat air patrol. No enemies encountered. Heavy flak encountered over target and industrial area Zulpich. S/Ldr 'Skipper' Merfort hit by flak, rudder blown off and pitched down in steep dive. I did not see the plane hit the ground but he is unlikely to have survived the steep dive. Reformed on F/Lt 'Madov' Emblin wing and he was also hit by heavy flak but managed to nurse the plane back to Liege / Bierset A-93. Reformed on White flight and landed at Le Culot East Y-10 having considerable oiling on my windscreen navigation was difficult | ||
