In today's operation I flew as Blue 1 in element BUMPER, which was led by P/O 'Barnacles' Barns. The unit was tasked with an Armed Recce over the bridgehead in the vicinity of Herleen. A small formation of Fw-190s was encountered and we were orderd by red leader to engage. F/O 'Zach' Z. Lamothe and me did considerable damage to enemy but not enough to cause any visual lethal damage. I decided to disengage Blue flight as we were getting too low in altitude and fuel was running low quickly. During teh engagement, P/O 'Bird' Irwin, who was flying as Blue 3, lost his engine and was forced to crash land near the front lines. The rest of the flight re-grouped quicly and returned to Red Section. The rest of the flight was uneventful and all remaining pilots, with the exception of S/Ldr 'Skipper' Merfort, who also lost his engine mid-flight, RTBed safely. | ||
